French interactive CD rom

I have just received an email from a French teacher saying "I researched and found Skoldo! I do like the CD rom and take immense satisfaction when I tell people it cost £12 compared to the hundreds other things cost!"
The £12.00 is for the multi user licence but if you want the CD rom for personal use then it only costs £5.99.

I'm delighted that the school office decided to buy such a useful French resource within budget.

A game of alphabet pairs

Taught a small group of six children today and we were revising the French alphabet.
Before the lesson I printed out two copies of the Alphabet Picture from the Skoldo website
http://www.skoldo.com/node/2404 and then cut out all the little pictures and laid them between the laminate sheets. I then cut out all the little laminated squares of alphabet pictures.
Popped all the pictures into an envelope marked ALPHABET GAME.
At the end of the lesson we played pairs turning over two pictures at a time, remembering where they were, turning them back face down and continuing until a pair could be found.
Each child had a go until all the pairs could be found.
A variation (if short on time) is for the children to work in pairs and turn over four cards at a time.
They LOVED it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FUN FRENCH What does this mean?

When teachers ring up the office and ask about Skoldo products, the majority tell me that they are only interested in fun material.
"What do you mean by fun material?" I ask.
They usually reply "Well, we don't want the children to do any writing or reading, we are just looking for songs and games."
I am now bold enough to say that it can be fun setting high standards, teaching well and watching children succeed.
If we don't encourage children to learn (read, write and speak) a foreign language at primary level is it such a surprise that once they get to secondary school and are faced with grammar, spelling, memorising vocabulary and learning irregular verbs they wish to give up.

Teach well, use quality material and watch the children have fun succeeding.

Amazing Summer Sales

This summer Skoldo has seen a 17% increase in its sales of French books.
Overseas sales have been strong and schools and parents are showing more interest in French books teaching grammar, offering exercises and developing vocabulary and conversation.

We were doing Skoldo Book Two page 3 and most of them rushed into the exercise and made lots of mistakes. They wrote 'mon' at the beginning of each sentence even if though 'ma' and 'mes' were required. This was because the first answer began with Mon and they didn't read the questions and apply logic.

They also included 'est' in every answer even though the last two sentences were plural and required 'sont'.

This has shown me clearly that the girls don't think independently when working. It could be that they were distracted because whilst the French lesson was taking place the bee

man came to kill FOUR wasps nests in the sheds and garden. Great excitment! We also had a sprinkler on the lawn so it was all I could do to stop them running under the water to keep cool.

Today has been a perfect English summer's day.

Interactive CDroms on Amazon

Broomwood Hall School

Yesterday I went to visit Broomwood Hall School in London so the 6 and 7 year old children studying French with Skoldo could 'Meet the author' .
It was a welcoming, busy, happy school where I was made to feel at home and given the opportunity to teach two lessons. The children were delightful, alert and well behaved.
We practiced the vocabulary for 'le transport' and reinforced the lesson using the Skoldo Interactive CDrom. I was encouraged by the enthusiasm the children had for Skoldo and especially the software.
My thanks to all the staff at the school who made the visit so worthwhile.

Having had the summer away from the blog I am now back teaching in two village schools and at home.
Today I taught a group of five 6 & 7 year olds and we learned the five French words for food.

le fromage

During the hour long lesson, the children pronounced the vocabulary, completed page 14 in the Skoldo Elementary Book, http://www.skoldo.com/catalog/52/unit_14_food did a wordsearch and completed and coloured in the picture. We also played a game of bingo.
We sang the song "Un oiseau deux oiseaux" http://www.skoldo.com/catalog/189/un_oiseau_deux_oiseaux
and learned the words oiseau(x), bateau(x), château(x) and seau(x)
We revised the questions:
Comment tu t'appelles-tu?
Quel âge as-tu?
Où habites-tu?

Typing French accents on a pc

When writing French on a PC it is always a nuisance having to sort out the accents. When you type in a word document you can always choose the accent from clicking on 'insert' and then 'symbol'. If this option is not available then you need to learn or see the relevant codes.
The easiest way is to copy the following list onto a piece of paper and put it somewhere easy to see.
Don't forget that the numbers you type in must be chosen from the number pad on the right of the keyboard.

KS2 Assessment on Food

Friday was the last lesson of term so I used the Skoldo Scheme of Work assessment chart to see how much the Year 6 children had learnt and understood over the past few weeks.

Whilst testing the children, they finished off their cut out pictures of food and mounted them on sugar paper.
1. Tick the box if the pupils know the French for at least 5 things to eat:
2. Recognise the symbol ' and say that it is called an apostrophe.
Add an extra tick if the pupil can say why an apostrophe is used.
3. How do you say 'I would like ...' in French.
Add an extra tick if the child can ask for two things to eat.
4. Read and pronounce the following words: le lait, le pot, les frites, le paquet
Add an extra tick if the child can pronounce the following: l’oeuf and les oeufs
5. What does 'plural' mean?
Add an extra tick if the child can pronounce the word ‘les’

Most of the children could recognise the flashcards of 'food' which was encouraging.
Most, without prompting, could say 'I'd like' in French.
Quite a few of them had difficulty knowing what an apostrophe is and what it is used for.
Reading the flashcards of words caused no problem.
Few of them knew what 'plural' meant but they could pronounce the word 'les'.

Colours agreeing with the noun they describe

English speaking children find the concept of masculine and feminine nouns very difficult to understand.

What is even more difficult is that, in French, colours come AFTER the noun they describe and they have to agree with the noun they describe.

For example:

le pull vert - the green jumper (masculine)

la chemise verte - the green shirt (feminine)

le jean bleu - the blue jeans

la jupe bleue - the blue skirt

le pantalon blanc - the white trousers

la chaussette blanche - the white sock

All the Skoldo colour flashcards have both the masculine and feminine spellings written on them.

There is an excellent song to help the children remember that in French the colours come after the noun.

French Food and Skoldo Scheme of Work

I have just returned from taking the year 6 lesson on food.
We started the lesson revising the questions:
Comment tu t'appelles-tu?
Quel âge as-tu?
Où habites-tu?
The children could answer 'Comment tu t'appelles-tu?' without any difficulty but had problems remembering the answers to the other two questions. It is a matter of practice! practice! practice! which just goes to show how slow learning a foreign language is when you only have about one hour a week.
I handed out the 10 flashcards on food and asked those children to stand up and role play being in a shop and asking for that food not forgetting to say 's'il vous plaît'.
This they managed well although they still pronounce the 's' in words like les pâtes.

When finished they handed the flashcard to another child and we continued until all the children had spoken.
I put up the rap/song "Je fais les courses" on the interactive whiteboard and we sang it through twice.
The children are getting more confident speaking/rapping French but need to be more fluent in getting the words pronounced quickly.
We had a game of food lotto which always goes well.
At the end of the lesson the children completed the cut out/stick activity mentioned earlier.
The lesson went on for nearly an hour but the time went quickly and everyone was involved.
Next week I shall assess the pupils using the Skoldo Scheme of Work.

I've just had a on-line shopper download lots of worksheets to cover the topic 'colours'.

This is one of most rewarding lessons in a foreign language because it is probably the first contact the children have with new sounds and words.

All the activities are colourful and rich in sights and sounds and the children love the new world they are entering.
Use flashcards to cover all 10 colours.
The support material encourages the children to listen, colour and create.

Tomorrow I am teaching a year 6 class and we shall be revising food, shopping and the French for 'some' as well as practising the song rap 'Je fais les courses'.

I think I shall give them the worksheet called 'Découpe et colle les images' which involves colouring in five items of food, cutting them out and then sticking them onto the relevant silhouettes.
Neatness, creativity and accuracy will be the order of the day!

The object of the lesson is to create a neat piece of work which can be mounted onto sugar paper and displayed.
Each child should, at the end of the lesson, be able to ask for the food they have coloured in.

On Friday I taught a year 6 French lesson on food (Skoldo Book One units 14 and 15)
I'd emailed the worksheets (downloaded from the Skoldo website) ahead of the lesson and the office had photocopied 2 double sided A4 sheets for me one for each pupil.
The rap song 'Je fais les courses' (Age group 6 - 10 worksheets unit 23)
Food bingo (Age group 6 - 10 worksheets units 14 and 15)
The oral exercise (Age group 6 - 10 worksheets unit 15)
Revision sheet on clothes and food (Age group 6 - 10 worksheets unit 15)

Everyone was dressed up in costumes taken from their favourite books.
We hadn't taken a lesson for two weeks due to other commitments so the 40 minute lesson started with 10 Skoldo flashcards showing items to eat.

We revised the concept of masculine and feminine, helped by the fact that feminine words were written in red and masculine words were written in blue.
The children soon remembered the words and we were then able to revise 'du' and 'de la' and start a sentence with 'Bonjour, je voudrais ...'

Next I changed to singing the rap song 'Je fais les courses' but had mislaid the CD which contained the coloured pdf with the soundtrack embedded in it so we couldn't put it up on the interactive whiteboard.
The classroom assistant kindly fetched a CD player and we played the song whilst the children sung the words from the black and white song worksheet which the office had photocopied for me. They were a bit giggly and awkward as the music started and we practiced the pronunciation.

Once we had gone through the first half of the song twice, I changed activity again and we went through the oral exercise which was easy to complete but involved listening.
It revised all the vocabulary on food and asking for things to eat.
All the children managed to get full marks for the exercise although I suspect there was alot of help among friends. Never mind, at least they were actively listening and enjoying their succes in understanding full French sentences.

We then played food bingo.
This was found on the reverse side of the rap song 'Je fais les courses'.
Immediately the children relaxed and thoroughly enjoyed the game. A new girl and her mother came into the class whilst we were playing bingo and although there was a buzz of tension and excitment, all was under control and reasonably quiet!
After three games of bingo and giving the winners a skoldo reward sticker, we returned to the song rap which the children felt much easier singing.
Hopefully, they will be able to perform the whole rap song in front of the whole school at the end of term.

By the end of the lesson they knew 10 words for food and how to ask for them.
They knew that you pronounce the 'f' in oeuf but don't pronounce the 'f' in oeufs.
They could read, pronounce and sing confidently the first verse of the rap song and had been engaged and motivated throughout the whole 40 minutes.
